Taking Care of Deer Mounts

The first step in taking care of taxidermy deer mounts is to ensure it is not subjected to extreme heat. The number one place to avoid is over or around a fireplace, it may look good but will make your deer mount deteriorate faster. The other place to avoid is anywhere where your mount will get direct sunlight, as the sun will fade the hide.

To keep deer mounts looking good is easy, simply wipe the dust off gently with a brush working with the hairs and not against them. For hard to reach dust, gently use compressed air to blow off the dust.

If you want the deer mount to have a realistic shine, project the hairs and keep dust from collecting, you can use a horse spray. To achieve this, spray the deer mount then brush the hairs gently, ensure to use a brush that won’t leave lines, if not you can use a clean cloth instead.

For the eyes, use a small amount of glass cleaner and a q-tip and rub the cleaner on the glass eyes. This will give them a clean and glossy look.

Lastly, to complete the look, let’s not overlook the antlers. Combine a 50/50 mix of oil soap and water. It helps keep antlers from drying out and becoming chalky. Apply the solution to the bases with an old toothbrush to get into the tight spots.

For custom deer mounts, learning how to properly field dress a deer is the first step in taking care of your mount.

There are several options to choose when it comes to deer mount ideas.
