About the Pronghorn Antelope

The fastest hoofed animal in North America, the Pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana), otherwise known as the prong buck, prairie antelope, or American antelope, is truly a unique animal. Its closest relatives are not actually antelopes, but the the members of Giraffidae, which includes all subspecies of giraffe and the okapi.

The Pronghorn antelope has the ability to run with speeds of up to 55 miles per hour. It’s a medium-sized ungulate, standing about three feet tall at the shoulder and weighing between 90 and 140 lbs.

This animal is social, living in herds. The size of a Pronghorn antelope herd will depend on the season and the availability of food and water. In the winter, herds may consist of several hundred animals, while in the summer, they may break up into smaller groups of 10 to 20 animals. Pronghorn antelope are known for their incredible speed and agility, which enables them to outrun most predators with ease.

About the Pronghorn Antelope’s Horns

One of the most characteristic feature of the Pronghorn antelope is its distinctive horns. The Pronghorn’s horns are one of the main reasons why taxidermy enthusiasts and hunters find this ungulate so fascinating and a must-have for their collection.

The male Pronghorn, also called a buck, has longer and more distinctive horns than the female (doe). A Pronghorn’s horns are made up of a bony core and a keratinous sheath. The horns grow from the top of the Pronghorn’s head and curve backward. They are shed and regrown each year, and they can reach up to 20 inches in length. In addition, the buck has a dark patch of fur on their necks, while the doe does not.

Types of Pronghorn Antelope Taxidermy Mounts

Pronghorn antelope taxidermy mounts are a popular way to display the beauty and uniqueness of this species. There are several different types of mounts available.

Life-Size Mounts

For hunters who have had a successful hunt, you’ll want to properly care for your Pronghorn so that your local taxidermist can craft a beautiful full-body trophy. Life-size Pronghorn taxidermy mounts are the most expensive option, yet are worth the investment if you have plenty of space, or have a particular pose or custom habitat in mind for your Pronghorn. Or, if you’re not a hunter, but you’re looking for a Pronghorn life size mount, we have several options available in our online store.

Shoulder Mounts

If you want to conserve on space, or prefer your mounts to be displayed on your office, cabin, or museum wall, we have lots of Pronghorn antelope shoulder mounts available to you. Shoulder mounts feature the head and shoulders of the animal, mounted on a plaque or pedestal. Shoulder mounts are a great option for focusing on the unique horns of the Pronghorn antelope. Shoulder mounts are also perfect for displaying alongside other hooved North American mammals such as the Bison, Mule deer, and Elk.

European Mounts/Skulls

Lastly, another popular way of showing off the animal’s horns is by crafting it into a European mount displayed on your wall or as a skull sitting on your desk. Both the European mount and the skull will undergo a process of Dermestid beetle cleaning, which is more effective and better preserves the skull without breaking it down (as opposed to bleaching the skull.) A European mount can be displayed on a pedestal or plaque and mounted on a wall. A Pronghorn skull can be mounted and displayed in a museum exhibit, or on your bookshelf or desk.
