About the Beaver
Beavers are large, semi-aquatic rodents belonging to the family Castoridae. This rodent species is an excellent swimmer, with dense, waterproof fur, webbed hind feet, transparent eyelids for underwater vision, and the ability to hold their breath for up to 15 minutes. Their self-sharpening teeth are usually a yellow-orange color that grow continuously throughout the animal’s life. There are two living species of beaver:
North American Beaver Taxidermy Mounts (Castor canadensis)
The North American Beaver, also known as the American Beaver or Canadian Beaver, is the larger of the two beaver species. These impressive rodents are the largest rodents in North America and the second-largest rodents in the world after the capybara, and have a conservation status of Least Concern. If you’re looking for classic North American wildlife taxidermy, the North American Beaver is an essential addition to your collection, alongside other small mammals like the Red Fox, Badger, Raccoon, Skunk, and Porcupine.
An adult North American beaver typically weighs around 35-70 pounds, and measures approximately 3-4 feet in body length with an additional 10-18 inch tail. Their dense, waterproof coat ranges from light brown to dark chocolate brown. The distinctive flat, scaly tail serves multiple purposes: fat storage, temperature regulation, communication by tail slapping on the surface of the water, and as a rudder while swimming.
Eurasian Beaver Taxidermy Mounts (Castor fiber)
The Eurasian Beaver, also known as the European Beaver, is slightly smaller than its North American cousin but equally a unique addition to add to your taxidermy collection if you’re focusing on Eurasian specimens. Found across Europe and parts of Asia, these beavers were once nearly extinct but have made a remarkable recovery through conservation efforts and now also have a conservation status of Least Concern.
The adult Eurasian beaver typically weighs around 30-65 pounds and measures slightly smaller than North American Beavers. They have a more elongated skull, narrower and more oval-shaped tail, and slightly different tooth structure compared to North American Beavers. Their dense, waterproof coat ranges from light brown to dark brown.
Beaver Taxidermy Life Size Mounts
If you’re looking to expand your North American or Eurasian mammals collection, the beaver is an essential addition. They pair well with other aquatic creatures like muskrats, ducks, geese, or alongside other small mammals. A custom habitat with your life size beaver taxidermy mount will bring the create to life. Add a tree branch, twigs, cattails, brush, and water elements to make the display a lifelike representation of the beaver’s natural habitat and dam-making behavior.
The beaver will look great on a tabletop, in a pond taxidermy collection in your cabin, or in a nature center/museum for educational purposes. At All-Taxidermy, we take special care to ensure the North American or Eurasian beaver is as close to the real thing as possible, with each of its individual dense furs, sharp teeth, scaly paddle tail, and webbed claws preserved with the highest level of detail to bring your life-size mount to life.
Beaver Fur Pelts/Rugs
Did you know that the beaver possesses a double-layered coat, with up to 23,000 hairs per square inch? If you also hunt and collect the furs and hides of other mammals, the beaver pelt is another great addition. At All-Taxidermy, one of our favorite ways to display this animal is as a fur pelt or rug put up on a cabin, store, or museum wall. This taxidermy option is great for those who want to focus on the dense fur and tail of this semi-aquatic animal.
In fact, the beaver has historically been hunted for its pelt both in Europe and North America for many centuries, prized for its thick coat which was used to make clothing and hats. Browse all our beaver pelts online, or bring us your latest beaver hunt and we can make a pelt for you to display in your taxidermy rugs and hides collection.
Beaver Skulls
Looking for animal skulls for your cabin? If you’re also getting your beaver made into a pelt, you can also opt to preserve its skull as well. At All-Taxidermy, we preserve animal skulls using the Dermestid beetle cleaning method. If you’re shopping our current inventory, our highest quality animal skulls will be notated by our Deluxe Beetle Cleaning logo.
Beyond hunting for sport, the beaver skull of the North American and Eurasian beaver is also an educational resource for nature centers and museums, since it shows off the anatomical structure of the beaver’s head and distinctive teeth. Beaver skulls and teeth are a great resource for helping children and families better understand and appreciate this semi-aquatic rodent’s behavior and natural habitat.
