Prepping Fish Taxidermy Mounts

Once you caught the fish you want to mount, it’s important to act fast in order to ensure that it is in the best condition. Following the steps below will provide the best results.

  • The first step is to take a photograph of your fish, this is because fish begin to lose their original color in just 90 seconds after taken out of the water. With the photo, our taxidermists will be able to recreate the color of your fish more accurately.
  • The next step is to decide on the side of the fish you show. After choosing, it is important to keep the show side facing up to avoid losing a scale or deforming it.
  • When it comes to storing the fish, the best option is to freeze the trophy in its own cooler for a minimum of two days. If you do freeze it, always make sure the fish is on a flat surface and the show side is facing up. If that is not possible the next best option is to wrap the fish in a wet towel.
  • Once the fish is ready for transport to our taxidermists, simply put it in a plastic bag either completely frozen or still wrapped in the wet towel.

Caring for Fish Taxidermy Mounts

As time goes on, dust and the environment can impact the look of the fish. When it comes to the different types of fish mounts, the replica mounts typically last longer than the real fish mounts. It’s important to take care of the fish mounts to ensure the longest life possible.

The first step in taking care of your fish taxidermy mounts is to dust regularly, either with a damp cloth or with a compressed air device. Be extra careful around the fins as they are very delicate and can break easily.
Avoid putting your fish mount in direct sunlight, as this will fade the color and skin over time. To avoid discoloration, do not place your taxidermy near high heat or smoke.
