About the Zebra
Zebras belong to the horse family (Equidae) and are native to Africa. An unmistakable African species, it’s known for its distinctive black and white striped patterns, which are unique to each individual like human fingerprints. Zebras are social animals that live in herds among Africa’s plains, mountainous regions, and savannahs. There are three main species of zebra, each with distinct characteristics. Let’s talk about them below:
Plains Zebra Taxidermy Mounts (Equus quagga)
The Plains Zebra, also known as the Common Zebra or Burchell’s Zebra, is the most widespread and numerous of all zebra species. If you’re looking for African plains game taxidermy, the Plains Zebra is an excellent choice for your collection! Plains Zebras are the largest of the zebra species, with adult males weighing around 385-850 lbs and females typically weighing between 350-400 lbs.
The Plains Zebras feature a classic zebra stripe pattern with broad black stripes on a white background. Their stripes typically extend under the belly, and many individuals show “shadow stripes” – lighter stripes between the main black stripes, which you may notice on your taxidermy trophy as well. The Plains Zebra’s mane is tall and striped, and they also have a distinctive dewlap under their throat.
Mountain Zebra Taxidermy Mounts (Equus zebra)
The Mountain Zebra dwells in the mountainous terrain of southwestern Africa. They are a little smaller than Plains Zebras, with adults weighing around 450-660 lbs and standing at about 3.5-4.5 feet tall at the shoulder. This species has a compact, muscular build that’s perfect for navigating rocky terrain.
Mountain Zebras have a pronounced dewlap, a white belly with a black stripe running along it, and narrow stripes that don’t extend onto the belly. In addition, their ears are larger and more rounded compared to Plains Zebras.
Grevy’s Zebra Taxidermy Mounts (Equus grevyii)
Lastly, the Grevy’s Zebra is the largest and most endangered of all zebra species, having longer legs when compared to their other striped cousins. Found in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia, Grevy’s Zebras are impressive animals with the adult males weighing in at around 770-990 lbs and standing at about 4.5-5.5 feet tall at the shoulder.
Grevy’s Zebras are distinguished by their very narrow stripes (more numerous than other species), large rounded ears, white belly without stripes, and distinctive mane that stands erect. They also have a unique vocalization – a deep, resonant call that differs from the barking calls of other zebra species. Due to their endangered status, Grevy’s Zebra taxidermy is much more rare.
