Great for Any Wildlife Collection!

Groundhog mounts work well on their own or with other mammals. They look great next to other small game like squirrels, rabbits, beavers, badgers, skunks, and prairie dogs. They also make interesting additions to displays with larger game like deer, elk, or bear.

A woodchuck taxidermy display will be well-suited for any cabin, office, nature center, or store. Their size makes them perfect for offices, hunting cabins, or anywhere you want to show off North American wildlife.

About the Groundhog

The groundhog (Marmota monax), also called a woodchuck, is a well-known North American rodent in the marmot family. You may have even seen them in your backyard or an open field foraging for grass! The groundhog lives throughout the eastern United States and much of Canada, from Alaska down to Georgia and west to the Great Plains. They prefer open fields, meadows, and edges of forests where they can dig burrows and watch for danger. These sturdy animals weigh 4-14 lbs. and are 16-27” long, plus a 6-10” tail. They have thick, coarse fur that’s brown to gray, strong claws for digging, and big front teeth perfect for eating plants.

Groundhogs hibernate from October through March. When they’re active, they come out mostly in early morning and late afternoon to eat and work on their burrows. They can climb trees well and run up to 10 mph when scared. Groundhogs are herbivores, eating grass, clovers, dandelions, wild strawberries, and farm crops. They help spread seeds and provide food for larger predators. Groundhogs are common throughout their range and not threatened. In many places, farmers consider them pests because they damage crops, which makes them popular hunting targets.
