Jackals belong to the genus Canis and are medium-sized members of the dog family. These highly adaptable canids have thrived across diverse habitats for thousands of years, from African savannas to Asian deserts and European woodlands. There are several distinct jackal species, each adapted to their specific environments and geographic regions.
When many people think of the jackal, the Black-Backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) is likely what comes to mind. Native to eastern and southern Africa, these jackals are easily recognizable by their characteristic black saddle marking that runs from the neck to the tail, contrasting with their brown and white fur.
Black-backed jackals are slightly smaller than golden jackals, typically weighing 13-24 pounds. Their striking coat pattern, combined with their alert expression are perfect for pairing alongside other iconic African species like the Lion, Leopard, Hyena, Cape Buffalo, Wildebeest, Hippopotamus, White Rhino, Giraffe, and Zebra.
The Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) is the most widespread jackal species, found across Africa, Asia, and southeastern Europe. These adaptable predators are known for their golden-brown to pale yellow coat, which can vary in coloration. Golden jackals typically weigh 15-30 pounds and measure around 28-34 inches in body length. Golden jackal males are generally larger than females.
Their long legs, pointed snout, and erect ears give them an alert, intelligent appearance that makes them perfect for African taxidermy subjects.
The Side-Striped Jackal (Lupulella adusta) is native to central and southern Africa, preferring woodland and scrubland habitats. This species earns their name thanks to their grayish-brown coat with distinctive white stripes along their sides. Their more subdued coloration and distinctive markings make them an excellent addition to any African wildlife taxidermy collection.
This is a more rare addition for your African taxidermy collection, but they will look great paired with other jackal species for African collections in museums, hunting stores, educational exhibitions, etc.
If you’re looking for other species to add to your collection alongside the jackal, please check out all our other taxidermy mounts here.
