Custom Deer Mounts

When you want a custom deer mount, the first thing your taxidermist will do is take detailed measurements in order to select the correct sized holder to fit your deer’s skin. You will also want to decide on the direction that you want your deer’s head turned.

Deer Mount Ideas

Once the head position has be decided upon, the next step is to choose a pose for your deer taxidermy.

You have the option to choose from upright, semi-upright, semi-sneak, and pedestal, the most commonly chose out of these is the upright position.

Remember, if you choose an upright or semi-upright pose, make sure there is enough room on top for the antlers to clear the ceiling.

Once you’ve chosen the pose and the turn of your deer, you need to decide how you’d like to display it in your home. You can hang it on the wall in a traditional flat back manner, or you can go a step further, and have your taxidermist attach it to a wooden display panel to compliment the décor in your home.

Deer Mount Ideas to Choose From

As you know, different forms will make a mount look very unique. Each one has their own emotion and presence. As an example, let’s look at the various whitetail deer mount styles to see how you might explain to a customer how to choose a taxidermy mount. More on 6 different ways to display your deer taxidermy here.

  • Upright: This mount features a deer that is standing tall and alert. The classic deer mount, it is a proud position normally mounted with alert ears and a slight turn to the left or right to accentuate the antlers. It is important to note that this pose needs to be hung lower on the wall but it does not stick out too far.
  • Semi-Upright: The semi-upright mount pose is less alert than the full upright mount, as the neck is lowered slightly. It offers a more natural look for a relaxed, dominant buck mount. Rotating one ear forward and one backward can also be a nice detail for a relaxed deer.
  • Semi Sneak: Is a relaxed pose that can be created with a small or large head turn. This position allows for the ears to be mounted either alert, relaxed, or one of each. This pose allows for the mount to be higher on the wall, but note that it does stick out farther than the upright mount.
  • Full Sneak: This is the most relaxed pose and can have ears that alert or relaxed. Not as popular as the Upright and Semi Sneak but a good change up from the typical poses.  It can be hung the highest on the wall but also extends the farthest from the wall.
  • Sweep Sneak: It shows a stretched-out, muscular rut neck with deep shoulders. The parallel neck position keeps the antlers lower for better ceiling clearance, though the deer also extends out into the room more. It resembles a buck in pursuit of a doe, so a curling lip or open mouth is a good artistic touch.
  • Pedestal: There are two different types of pedestal mounts that make great whitetail shoulder mounts. The floor pedestal mount brings it down to your level to save wall space and is very realistic looking, especially if you add other natural touches. The wall pedestal mounts show the deer’s front shoulder as if they are standing more or less broadside, which is a refreshing option to add to any trophy room.

Deer Skull Ideas

Some taxidermy enthusiasts prefer to show off their whitetail buck in the form of a skull. Think you want a deer skull instead of a shoulder mount or pedestal? Here are some deer skull ideas below:

1.) Deer Skull/European Mount

For the standard deer skull/European mount, all you need to do is bring your deer to your local taxidermist and have them prepare your deer skull for you. Once finished, simply hang on the wall in your living room, den, family room, or cabin. Read here for more information on how to hang a European mount.

2.) Deer Skull Stand

For a more natural deer skull idea, you can try a deer skull stand. Not only can you enjoy the beauty of a white deer skull, but you can also add habitat along with it – wooden log, stones, fake leaves, and fake grass or moss to complement it. Going with a deer skull stand is a great choice if you prefer your skull to sit on a desk and not be hung on your wall.

3.) Vertebrae Skull Mount

For a more unique mount display, you can try a deer skull mount along with some of the vertebrae from the buck. Alternatively, you can purchase artificial vertebrae. A vertebrae mount with the deer skull will make a great addition to your taxidermy or skull collection!

4.) Pedestal Mount

Another deer skull idea you can choose is the pedestal mount. If you are a more crafty person, you can make a DIY wooden pedestal or chat with your taxidermist to see if they have one for you to display your deer skull on. This is a more unique approach to the standard deer skull display.

5.) Multiple Deer Skull Wall Mount

If you have shot several deer, you can design a multiple deer skull wall mount. You can place one in the middle and two above and below it. Choosing a multiple skull design is a great choice for any hunter or cabin owner – plus it shows off the majesty of these whitetail antlers!
