About the Coyote
The coyote (Canis latrans) is a canine species that is native to North America. Its size is between the larger Gray, Red, Eastern wolves, and the smaller Red, Gray, Kit, and Arctic foxes of the Americas.
Coyote Species
The coyote is a very adaptable animal, with a conservation status of Least Concern. Its range spans from Central America and Mexico to across the entire United States, Southern Canada, and up through Alaska.
There are 19 different subspecies of coyote that live throughout North America. These include the Mexican coyote, San Pedro Martir coyote Salvador coyote, South Eastern coyote, Belize coyote, Honduras coyote, Durango coyote, Northern coyote, Tiburon Island coyote, Plains coyote, Mountain coyote, Mearns coyote, Lower Rio Grande coyote, California valley coyote, Peninsula coyote, Texas plains coyote, North Eastern coyote, Northwest Coast coyote, and the Colima coyote.
The Eastern coyote is also known as the “coywolf” or the “coydog,” because they interbred with wolves and dogs decades ago.
Coyote Behavior & Diet
Although coyotes have gained a negative, “trickster” reputation in folklore and pop culture, the coyote is a truly skilled hunter. It preys on white-tailed deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, rabbits, rodents, birds, lizards, snakes, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, and insects. While meat consists of about 90% of the coyote’s diet, the canine will also eat fruit and green wheat blades.
