Elk Mount Ideas for Your Cabin

Are you an elk mount enthusiast? You’ll want to check out just some of our elk mount ideas below. If you like big game hunting and taxidermy, elk are a must-have for your North American mammal collection.

Elk can be mounted as a:

  • European mount
  • Shoulder mount
  • Pedestal mount
  • Life-size mount

Like their cousins, the moose, elk are going to be a little pricier than most other animal mounts due to their sheer size. But overall, elk are definitely a worthy investment if you choose them for your taxidermy collection.

The males’ signature antlers, and the head stretched forward with an open mouth, indicating their bugle call, is a spectacular trophy to add to your cabin wall, living room, office, shop, or small museum.

1. Elk European Mounts

One of the most popular ways to show off an elk is by mounting the skull as an European mount. This is a great option if you simply want to appreciate the pristine white skull and the antlers on a wall or a desk. European elk mounts are also great because they are more affordable than some of the other elk taxidermy options mentioned in this article.

The elk European mount is a great choice if you’re concerned about space on your wall. If you just don’t have the room for a massive elk head, opt for an elk European mount instead.

2. Elk Pedestal Mounts

Another option for if you don’t have enough room for your wall, is by mounting the elk on a pedestal. This is an opportune way to include a bit of habitat along with your shoulder, head, and antlers of the bull elk.

For example, you can have the elk displayed along with a tree stump, a rock, and some fake grass, moss, or leaves. You can also have your elk perched on top of a box or 6-8 sided wooden pedestal. There are plenty of elk mount ideas for an elk pedestal mount! Simply discuss options with your local taxidermist to get the dream elk pedestal mount you’re looking for.

Another benefit to the elk pedestal mount is that is a little cheaper than a full, life-size mount with the entire animal, since it is just the shoulder, head, and antlers.

3. Elk Shoulder Mounts

A popular choice for elk taxidermy, opting for an elk shoulder mount means that you can show off the bull in its “bugling” stance. Or, you can have the elk with its head upright, overseeing your living room. Elk shoulder mounts are popular because you can show off the shoulder mount’s huge antlers, thick brown fur, and majestic expression.

Shoulder mounts are perfect for displaying alongside other members of the deer family, such as whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, and caribou. Contact the team at All-Taxidermy to get started, or view our pricing for your elk shoulder mount.

4. Life Size Elk Mounts

Prefer a life size mount? There are many elk mount ideas for a life size display of your bull. Work with your taxidermist to have your elk with a stretched forward stance as he bugles to impress cows and challenge other bulls. Or, you can have him posed as if he were sprinting through a field or wooded area.

You can also choose to have him lying down and resting among brush for a more serene scene. If you have two male elk, you can have them spar together, just as they would during the mating season.

About the Elk

  • General Info. The elk, Cervus canadensis, also called the wapiti, is among the largest deer species in the world. The elk’s alternative name wapiti comes from the Shawnee and Cree word “waapiti,” which means, “white rump.”
  • Distribution. The elk’s conservation status is Least Concern, and it lives in North America, and Central and East Asia.
  • Diet. Elk enjoy feeding on various plants such as grass, leaves, and bark.
  • Behavior. The animal travels in herds; cows travel in larger groups, whereas bulls are commonly seen traveling in smaller groups with other bulls. Male and female elk herds come together during the mating season in September and October. During these months, the male elk are heard uttering their distinctive bugling. These are loud series of calls that attract females and establish dominance over other males. The males will often engage in a behavior called sparring, where they butt heads forcefully and lock antlers in a heated battle for the cows.
  • Subspecies. There are quite a few different subspecies of elk in the world. Six of them are in North America (Roosevelt’s, Tule, Manitoban, Rocky Mountain, Eastern, and Merriam’s elk species). Four other subspecies are found in Asia (Altai, Tianshan, Manchurian, and Alashan wapiti species).
